According to mother Li Xiaoming doctors told her there was something wrong with her son before he was even born. She comments: "They told me my baby has a tumor within his belly when I was having my routine pregnancy checkup at 24 weeks". Doctors suggested she terminate the pregnancy but Xiaoming was determined to press ahead. Five days after her son was born doctors operated. Professor Huang said: "When we opened the belly we found the tumor nearly occupied the whole belly cavity, squeezing other organs aside". However, after removing the growth they discovered that it was actually an underdeveloped twin. Despite being curled in a ball the parasitic twin had clear facial features, hair, and four limbs. Parasitic twins occur when a twin embryo begins developing in utero, but the pair do not fully separate. One embryo then proves to be the dominant at the expense of the other.
